1. Food and water "rations" arrived in January- these are good for five years. They are supplemented by additional water in 5 gallon containers; I would like to get some canned items (pears and applesauce) when we move back to Hilltop.
2. Student emergency cards were distributed. Only 3/4s (approx.) have been returned so far.
3. Classroom backpacks were checked individually (in the past I have given the teachers the inventory and asked that they made sure they had everything and if not, to fill out a request form). Teachers received a binder containing their class roster, emergency forms and updated emergency information. Elisa Federspiel, Stacey Preston, Karla Clement and I will continue checking each classroom for the emergency cards, and will transfer them into their binders.
4. Emergency container was labeled and approximately half of the staff were given keys to the container (including Neighborhood school).
5. Two emergency procedures were developed, approved and distributed:
parent instructions in case of an emergency
and what the teachers should do in case of an emergency, particularly an earthquake.
A school phone tree has not yet been established.
6. A District-mandated chain of command is being developed, with staff members taking on specific roles as part of an emergency response team. I have gotten feedback from the staff committee (Aiken, Henry, Clement, Nichols and Sanders) and from a CERT trainer, Dave Gibson. Hopefully this Chain of command will be discussed and approved at the March 2 or 7 staff meeting.
7. I spoke with Dave Gibson of the EC Fire Department to arrange for emergency response training for our staff. We are aiming to have a pared down version of the 20+ hour CERT program given as part of the teachers inservice/training that will take place Aug. 17/18 before school starts. This pared down version would include training for all staff in search and rescue, fire suppression, triage (some medical but does not replace an 8 hr first aid class) and the principles of emergency response. They would not be fully certified but all would be fairly knowledgeable. We could also sponsor an 8 hr Saturday first aid class for the whole community ($40/person) including staff who would get CE credits. For this year, we may organize some emergency response training for staff, but since this would be during staff meetings and on their own time, it may not be well-received.
8. Several people will help organize the emergency container on March 5th (weather permitting). Once organized, we can take an inventory of supplies in all categories: shelter and comfort; search and rescue; safety/security; medical. The District has made new suggestions for equipment that I know we do not have: eg a stretcher. I would like to make a list of what is needed and then draw up a budget for these items.
9. Quake Kare, Inc fundraiser took place in February. Leslie Peralta will find out how much money we made.
10. Expenses:
Backpack and container storage: $144.49
Student emergency cards: $120.51
Food and water: $4,032.13
11. Other plans:
Review with Lew Brower concerns about the kindergarten portables (no kickplates to open the windows)
Set-up a safety/emergency response display in the teachers lounge.
