...All children are creative, but your right brain child will be even more imaginative. The right brain learns things in "wholes" rather than parts, so that child will get math concepts well, but struggle with the "details" like the math facts, or checking work.... In test taking, the left brainer prefers the black and white choices presented in multiple choice questions, while the right brainer may prefer essay questions, where the whole picture can be given. Eighty percent of the struggling learners I see are right brain dominant. Does that mean that being right brain dominant is a weakness? Not at all!! As you know, Einstein was a flaming right brainer. Then why the discrepancy? It is because schools, and schoolwork, are set up to teach in a left brain style. Workbooks, worksheets, rote memorization (math facts), timed tests, lecture, learning facts from a test, learning vocabulary by looking up the meanings of the words in a dictionary and writing it out, are all left brain activities. If you have a child at home who is "balking" at doing the schoolwork that fits the description above, you probably are working with a right brain dominant child. ...

...Visual-spatial learners think in pictures rather than in words...They do not learn from repetition and drill. They are whole-part learners who need to see the big picture first beofre they learn the details.

One of the biggest problems for right-brain dominant children is that the school system does not meet their learning needs. We tend to present and teach information to the left-hemisphere only.... Most school systems are about 20 years behind the current psychological research data. We can't afford to wait for schools to catch up! ...
...One of the most interesting aspects of right-brain dominance that Linda Kreger Silverman, Ph.D. shared with us is that right-brain dominant children have an expanded moral conscience. These kids have a deep knowingness about what is right and wrong with the world and they passionately want to make things better. ...
... Children suffer when schools don't change to meet their needs.
